One of our neighbors received a call this week from scammers pretending to be IRS agents. They claim that you owe back taxes and a suit is being brought against you. They then want you to pay them the amount of “back taxes” owed immediately.
Everyone should be advised this is a scam and that the IRS will not call or email you about tax problems. The IRS will only contact you by US mail. If anyone has any questions about taxes, the IRS toll free phone number is 1-800-829-1040.
Channel 2 also had a story regarding this scam last week. Their recommendation is to “just hang up” – as the IRS will never contact you by phone.
