Houston City Vice Mayor Pro Tem Martha Castex-Tatum, Harris County District Attorney’s Office, Crime Stoppers of Houston, and Clear Channel Outdoor Launch Celebratory Gun Fire Safety Billboard Campaign Throughout Harris County in time for 4th of July celebrations

Celebratory gun fire is a problem throughout Harris County during holidays. Houston Vice Mayor Pro Tem Martha Castex-Tatum, Harris County District Attorney’s Office, Crime Stoppers of Houston and Clear Channel Outdoor have joined forces to remind citizens of the dangers of celebratory gun fire and how to report those who celebrate with gun fire. Messages will be displayed on area Clear Channel Outdoor billboards including traditional boards and digital units in time for Fourth of July celebrations throughout Harris County.

The campaign launched on Thursday, June 22 by Vice Mayor Pro Tem Martha Castex-Tatum, Chief Michele Oncken, Harris County District Attorney’s Office, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, Commander Christopher Hassig, HPD Southwest Command Station, Nicole Christoph, Deputy Director Crime Stoppers Houston, Sandra Aguilar, mother of 12-year-old victim of Celebratory Gun Fire, and Lee Vela, Public Affairs, Clear Channel Outdoor-Houston.

Each year guns are routinely fired into the air as a part of holiday celebrations. This is not only illegal but dangerous for people in the surrounding the area. Arrests have been made in Harris County over the past few years of people indiscriminately firing weapons. People, especially children, have been injured due to this practice. The billboard campaign is aimed at reminding residents of the dangers of this practice and urging anyone to report those who celebrate with gun fire to Crime Stoppers of Houston. This program is a joint effort of Crime Stoppers of Houston, Houston Vice Mayor Pro Tem Martha Castex-Tatum, and Harris County District Attorney’s Office. The campaign will consist of 31 traditional billboards on freeways and in neighborhoods and on up to 12 digital billboard units in Harris County in time for Fourth of July Celebrations. The campaign will be used again in December in time for New Year’s celebrations as well.
