This highly popular food truck serves up the largest, most fully-loaded potatoes that can be squeezed into a to-go box. Expect to wait in line for your extravagant potato, because this truck draws a crowd. Customers rave about the “Lord Have Mercy,” featuring chicken, beef, bacon wrapped shrimp, crawfish, bell peppers, and a large helping of melted cheese over your potato. The “Oxtail” another fan favorite, of course contains tender oxtail mixed with potatoes, cheese, and broccoli. Bet you didn’t know just how delicious baked potatoes could be.

Helen infuses the rich flavors of Jamaica in her popular oxtail, jerk chicken, garlic shrimp, brown stew chicken, and much more. Native to Jamaica, Helen spent years in the island’s restaurant industry, learning to cook the very best traditional dishes. Customers who have traveled to Jamaica claim that Helen’s food is even better than dishes they tried there.

“Cajun food is everyday cuisine,” says Timothy Mosley, owner of this Cajun restaurant and event space. “With Cajun, there is enough variety for any day of the week, and to fit various dietary restrictions.” Their menu is packed with Cajun flavor from their flavored wings, catfish, shrimp, po-boys, red beans and rice, jambalaya, and more. This new 5,000 square foot space includes a dance floor, stage, DJ setup, and a full kitchen.

The Stuffed Baked Potato Factory
14708 Hiram Clarke Rd, Houston, TX 77053
Website

Famous for their heaping helpings, The Stuffed Baked Potato Factory has become a regular stop for many dedicated customers over the years. With boxes brimming with potatoes and toppings, one portion is sure to feed at least two people. This restaurant is famous for their potato boxes, which come in “big azz” or “small azz” sizes, as well as their baked potato casseroles, which feed 6-8 people. You can even customize your potato to add even more toppings (or remove toppings) from your already over-stuffed potato. With a wide selection of potatoes on the menu, you’ll have to see which one becomes your new favorite.

Coffee and Cake Café
4407 W Fuqua St suite l, Houston, TX 77045
Facebook

Ruby founded Coffee and Cake Café as a way to provide employment for formerly incarcerated individuals. “I’ve seen some people go get degrees and are still rejected by employers,” says owner Ruby Woodward. “What are we doing as a society? We want people to pay for their crimes, but it shouldn’t be a life sentence.” Ruby’s nutmeg-infused, buttery tea cakes, iced lemon pound cake, or red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting will be enough to keep you coming back for more. And with prices like $2.50 for a slice of delicious cake, it’s hard not to leave with an armful of goodies.

Mad Max BBQ

“Home of the Best Ribs” is a title not simply displayed on the back of owner Tevron Maxwell’s shirt, but a claim verified by Mad Max BBQ customers in the Five Corners District. And, I would argue that Tevron’s BBQ food truck is also home to the best potato salad and country beans around. “Some people come just to get the beans!” says Tevron, as he pulls out large tins of hot beans mixed with ground beef from off the smoker attached to his truck. The mouth-watering, smoky aroma of ribs, chicken, and brisket, and pulled pork is his best advertisement, bringing in hungry customers driving down West Orem.

“When we started out, the recipes were strictly out of my head, with a few exceptions. Brown gravy over rice is one of my specialties here, and I learned that from my mother. The collard-greens recipe is my brother’s,” explains Catherine Reado Simon. Their chicken, shrimp and sausage gumbo, as well as the bell peppers stuffed with ground beef, shrimp, and rice are exclusively made by Catherine. She adds her own personal flair to the family gumbo recipe, which makes it difficult to be replicated. Hungry customers will also be tempted by soul food classics such as chitterlings (or chitlins), okra, or smothered chicken, perfectly washed down with a Kool-Aid or peach tea.

Daiquiri Shack
12805 Cullen Blvd, Houston, TX 77047
Yelp

This drive-through daiquiri shop just opened in January 2020, and shares a building with the Chevron station. With a wide selection of daiquiris such as “Texas Tea,” “Trouble in Paradise,” or “Voodoo,” there are enough flavors for anyone with a sweet tooth. Small daiquiris cost $6, while a whole gallon costs $33. Daiquiri Shack also offers non-alcoholic drinks, and snacks such as wings, boudin, and personal pizzas.

ReMo’s Café BBQ-Soulfood
8420 S Sam Houston Pkwy W #260, Houston, TX 77085
Yelp

ReMo’s Café has quickly become a favorite for southern style BBQ. Grab a meat plate and choose between beef, chicken, sausage, ribs, or smoked pork, with two delicious sides. With a choice between yams, okra, mac and cheese, collard greens, potato salad and more, there are no wrong decisions. Feeling extra carnivorous? Order any of their meats by the pound, or try a combination plate of two tender meat choices. As with any true southern establishment, you can trust that the customer service will be as warm as the food they serve.
