On September 10, H-GAC held two open houses seeking input from the public about the Southwest Freeway. Approximately 300,000 vehicles utilize the corridor daily. Congestion on the 14 mile study area (I-45 – Beltway 8) costs motorists $180 Million per year. The segment from the 610 Loop to downtown ranks third of the state’s most congested freeways.
The Southwest Freeway study looks at lower cost solutions that can be implemented in the next 5-10 years. Some of the alternative strategies include real time vehicle re-routing; intersection and interchange improvements, quicker ways to clear accidents, and alternative travel options such as carpools and telecommuting.
If you were unable to attend the open house, you can find a virtual open house here. You can also watch a walkthrough video here. For more information visit: www.mysouthwestfreeway.com.
