United Way of Greater Houston leverages local matching funds to access federal dollars for nontraditional Houston area public transportation services.
According to the 2012 United Way Community Assessment:
- About 30 percent of senior caregivers provide transportation services for the senior.
- About 20 percent of service providers and nonprofit advocates surveyed said transportation was an unmet need.
- Better access to jobs, education and medical services could be improved with better transportation options.
United Way of Greater Houston has provided partial funding for various transportation initiatives for almost a decade. The funding is in the form of small grants to service providers and nonprofit organizations.
Unmet transportation needs for lower-income families and individuals, youth, job seekers and returning veterans still persist in the Greater Houston region.
