Lynn Whitfield and Robin Givens, both accomplished, veteran actresses of stage and screen, have been selected as the new keynote speakers for the Houston Community College Black History Scholarship Gala, which takes place Saturday, February 29, 2020.

The pair will speak on the theme The Empowerment of the Black Woman. Their personal accomplishments and desire to promote scholarship of African-American students makes them ideal to speak at this long-running Houston fundraising event.

“We are thrilled to present two women with such extraordinary talents and experiences to speak to our community about how they have been empowered,” says Michael Edwards, J.D., chair of the HCC Black History Committee and Interim Associate Vice Chancellor Governmental and External Affairs at HCC. “Our students and sponsors will no doubt be impressed with their persistence and life lessons.”

Whitfield and Givens are taking the place of the initial scholarship gala keynote speaker Phylicia Rashad, who had a scheduling conflict and could not attend the gala.

Now in its 13thyear, the HCC Black History Scholarship Gala raises scholarship funds for students attending Houston Community College. Tables and tickets to the scholarship gala can be obtained at www.hccs.edu/blackhistory
