Beat the Heat, Houston! Stay Cool & Stay Safe

Summer temps are rising, and the Houston Health Department is here to help you and your family stay safe with Beat the Heat resources—including free A/C units for eligible residents, smart cooling tips, and ways to spot signs of heat-related illness.

Need Help at Home?

If you or someone you know is without A/C, check out the Air Conditioner Assistance Program—especially for seniors and medically vulnerable residents.

 Simple Tips to Stay Cool:

  • Drink water often—even if you’re not thirsty
  • Wear light, breathable clothing
  • Avoid outdoor activity during the hottest hours (11 AM–4 PM)
  • Head to a cooling center if needed

Know the Signs: Heat Exhaustion vs. Heat Stroke

Heat Exhaustion:

  • Heavy sweating
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Weakness
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Cool, clammy skin

Heat Stroke (Call 911):

  • Hot, dry skin
  • Confusion
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • High body temperature
  • Loss of consciousness

Don’t wait—heat stroke is a medical emergency.

Check on neighbors, especially older adults, and spread the word.
