Prepare for Cold Weather!
 
District K Residents and Friends,
 
Let’s make sure we are all prepared for the freezing temperatures expected to arrive in Houston, Thursday, December 22, 2022.
 
Houston Public Works, Houston Office of Emergency Management and BARC have suggested the following tips:
 
Be sure to sign up for Emergency Alerts to receive the latest updates: ALERT HOUSTON.
 
Report all service requests to call or visit 311.
 
Be warm; be safe: WINTER SAFETY.
 
 
 
  • Wrap exposed pipes located outside or in unheated areas of the home
  • Remove garden hoses connected to outside faucets
  • Turn off sprinkler systems or make sure they are not broken 
  • Shut off sprinkler systems before cold weather to prevent slick roads (and broken pipes)
 
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks next to outside walls
  • In unheated garages, shut off water to washing machines
  • Take extra precautions to protect pipes that have frozen in the past 
 
NOT GOING TO BE HOME:
  • Drain outside water faucets or leave home heating system on low
 
RENTAL PROPERTY TIPS:
  • Landlords are obligated to maintain their rental properties to the minimum standards set by the Houston Housing Code of Ordinances (Sec. 10-363). Heating equipment must be able to maintain a minimum inside temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit (measured three feet above the floor) when it is 20 degrees Fahrenheit outside. Warming Centers
 
WARMING CENTERS: 5 Warming Centers will open across the city of Houston. Residents needing transportation to a warming center should call 311.
 
 

Pet Information
 
Service animals are welcome at warming centers. The City is not encouraging families to bring animals to the warming centers. BARC will provide kennels at the Fulton Community Center and George R. Brown Convention Center locations.
