National Night Out 2020
is October 6th!
Although National Night Out 2020 won’t be like past years, we hope to keep the spirit of NNO alive and growing in District K. During the regular session of the City Council meeting on September 23, 2020, Mayor Turner encouraged communities to recognize the 36th Annual National Night Out by conducting virtual activities. Neighborhoods are encouraged to support NNO with the traditional display of outdoor lights on and fun community activities. We will miss visiting the many neighborhood events this year due to COVID-19. Although we may not physically be together, we still want to participate with our civic clubs and HOAs. What creative virtual activities do you have planned? Email us at DistrictK@houstontx.gov with your event information. We’re still stronger together!

Don’t Let Houston or District K
Be Undercounted

Undercounted means underfunded. As of this week, Houston is on track to receive only 58% of the federal money that we are eligible for. Monday, October 5th is the final day to answer 9 basic questions and be counted in the Census. The number of people in Houston that respond will set the amount of Federal dollars to be sent to Houston for the next 10 years. We won’t get another chance to be counted until a decade from now. Being counted helps make sure that our children and grandchildren get what they need to thrive.

A complete and accurate census supports better funding for disaster and healthcare services. Complete the survey in the safety of your home at www.my2020census.gov or call 844-330-2020 to complete the survey over the phone. Please share this with your networks.

Mayor Turner Authorizes Cite
and Release Program

Effective Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2020, Houston Police officers will be able to issue citations instead of arresting individuals for certain Class A and Class B misdemeanors. Mayor Sylvester Turner signed Executive Order No. 1-68 Monday afternoon, authorizing the City of Houston to join Harris County’s Cite and Release Program.

The Cite and Release policy is expected to help reduce the jail population for non-violent offenders, reduce the amount of time police officers spend on jail processing procedures, and improve response times by getting officers back into service more quickly.

Briargate Clean Up Volunteers

Thank you to the Briargate Clean Up Volunteers for scheduling two weekends a month to tackle the litter in their community. The volunteers meet every first and third Saturday at 8:00am to pick up discarded litter in the esplanades and their neighborhood streets. If you would like to join the Briargate Clean Up Volunteers, I know they would love to have your assistance. Check out their facebook page and join them every first and third Saturday.

If your neighborhood has a clean-up day or event scheduled let us know at DistrictK@Houstontx.gov. 50% of all litter on our streets is discarded from people in vehicles. It will take all of us working together to make District K and the city of Houston a litterless place to live.
