We Celebrate Our Veterans, Today!

Today we celebrate our veterans!!! The City is proud to pay tribute to our men and women in the military by providing an annual “Houston Salutes American Heroes Veterans Day Celebration.” This civic celebration will honor and celebrate the brave men, women, and families who have fought and sacrificed for our liberty and freedom.
The 10am ceremony begins with a 21-Gun-Salute and will end with a Moment of Silence in honor of the 100-year commemoration of the WWI Armistice. Keynote speaker and Grand Marshal of the parade is retired United States Marine Corp7s Platoon Commander, Daniel P. Moran.
At 11:30am the Houston Salutes American Heroes Parade begins. Hope to see you there.

HIRAM CLARKE BUS STOP & WALKWAY UPGRADES
Improvements to bus shelters and pedestrian walkways are coming to three METRO bus stops along Hiram Clarke Road thanks to a partnership with South Post Oak Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone 9 / Redevelopment Authority, the 5 Corners Management District, the Houston Parks Board and METRO.
The project will provide custom bus shelters and pad upgrades, crosswalk improvements, and way-finding and regulatory signage at bus stops on the west side of Hiram Clarke at Brookston Street, Tidewater Drive and Beran Drive near a hike and bike trail.

THORNWILD RD. SIDEWALK REPAIRS IN BRIARGATE
Construction to replace the damaged sidewalk from 7015 to 7023 Thornwild Rd. has been scheduled to commence on November 16, 2021. The project is anticipated to end by November 21,2021. This project is funded by Vice Mayor Pro Tem Castex-Tatum’s Council District Service Fund (CDSF).

HIRAM CLARKE RD. SIGNAL UPGRADES
Traffic signal upgrade work has been authorized at Hiram Clarke Rd. and W. Fuqua. Work is expected to be completed January 27, 2022. This reconstruction will include all signal equipment, pedestrian facilities and striping. The signal heads will be fixed on metal cantilevered arms instead of suspended cables. We are looking forward to this important mobility upgrade.

KNOTTY OAKS TRAIL SIDEWALK IMPROVEMENTS
IN BRENTWOOD
A work authorization has been issued to remove and replace concrete sidewalks and ramps on Knotty Oaks Trail (North side) from Southfield Drive to 4426 Knotty Oaks Trail & Glenwyck Drive (East side) from 13303 Glenwyck Drive to 13311 Glenwyck Drive.
Work will begin November 9, 2021, and is expected to end mid January 2022.

RICEVILLE SCHOOL RD. OVERLAY IN BRAYS OAKS
Work is authorized to overlay Riceville School Rd. from W. Airport to Beltway 8 with mill and asphalt overlay. Work is scheduled to begin November 15, 2021 and is expected to be completed December 15, 2021. We are looking forward to a smoother ride down Riceville School Rd soon.

GRANTMOOR LANE SIDEWALK IMPROVEMENTS
IN RAMBLEWOOD
A work authorization has been issued for the removal and replacement of sidewalks and ramps, to include installation of ADA ramps, at 13206 Grantmoor Ln to Woodmont Drive in Ramblewood neighborhood. Work will begin November 19, 2021 and is expected to be completed by the end of December 2021.

DEL REY LANE/VALLEY HILLS DRIVE
IMPROVEMENTS IN BRAEBURN VALLEY
Residents in Braeburn Valley will soon see the removal of the existing sidewalk and replacement with new concrete wheelchair ramps on all four corners of Del Rey Lane at Valley Hills Drive. Construction is scheduled to begin on November 19, 2021 and anticipated to end by the end of December 2021.

Willow Waterhole Greenway
Receives $4 Million Gift!
|

During MusicFEST last month, Vice Mayor Pro-Tem, joined by Mayor Sylvester Turner and Guy Hagstette announced that local philanthropists Rich and Nancy Kinder are donating $2 million to the Willow Waterhole Greenway’s Conservancy and pledging an additional $2 million to match gifts from others. The Conservancy aims to raise a total of $10 million for upgrades, which will include trail connections to neighborhoods, additional parking, a pier, an outdoor classroom and improvements to a native prairie preserve area.
The Brays Oak Management District also received $150,000 in Council District Service Funds from District K Council Member Martha Castex-Tatum to pave the Dryad Street (just east of Chimney Rock) entrance into the site. The project was finished just in time for the Conservancy’s successful annual MusicFEST, on Oct. 30th.
The Management District helps to maintain the Greenway along with the city Parks and Recreation Department and the Conservancy, and it partners with the conservancy on the property’s development plans.

Vice Mayor Pro-Tem Martha Castex-Tatum continues to promote the city-wide anti-litter campaign. The celebrations continue in honor of the City of Houston’s 185th birthday! Join the Vice Mayor Pro Tem, 5 Corners Management District, Smartscaping, SHCCC, KIPP students, Madison HS students, Willowridge HS students and community members in picking up 185 pieces of trash to help keep 5 Corners District clean. Meet us at Townwood Park at 8am if you’d like to join in the fun.

Thanksgiving Turkeys and Share Baskets

Thank you New Faith Church family for partnering with the District K office to provide Thanksgiving Share Baskets to our community members. This holiday celebration is a drive thru event to pick up a turkey for your family. This is also a great service project for student groups or individuals who may need service hours. Let’s make this holiday season a safe and joyful one for us all!

Have you seen the beautiful artwork along the Sims Bayou trail at South Post Oak? The artwork along the trail will be carried up to the bridge heads along South Post Oak as well. The cooler temperatures are perfect for walks or bike rides along the trail. I hope you enjoy the scenic views.

SER Jobs Offers Paid Career Training
for Young People

Young adults can receive hands-on, real world training in the Youth Build program offered by SER Jobs for Progress.
Participants can take GED classes, receive on the job construction training, earn job certifications, develop leadership and team building skills, and complete volunteer service projects.

Houston Botanic Garden Announces
“LIGHTSCAPE”

Public holiday celebrations will be back this year as Houston Botanic Garden announces that it will host Lightscape, a light show of artistic installations. Light installations will be placed throughout the gardens, including “Geo Forest,” 24 geometric trees with lights timed to work together, “Winter Cathedral,” an arched tunnel with thousands of twinkling LED lights, huge illuminated flowers called “Jigantics” and a “Fire Garden” showstopper with real fire flaming from candles.
It will run Nov. 19-Jan. 2 with tickets starting at $23 for adults and $16 for children on Dec. 1-2, 8-9 and 15-16, then $25/$18 on all remaining dates. Guests with garden memberships will save $2 off regular ticket prices.

The BakerRipley Houston Turkey Trot is back and it’s in-person or virtual for 2021. The event is returning to Uptown Houston on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, November 25th. It’s a community celebration for all to gather together again.
BakerRipley’s Turkey Trot is a key fundraiser that brings resources, education, and connection to more than half a million children, youth, adults and seniors across the Houston region.
