Today, the City of Houston will be extending the cancellation of all city-sponsored, produced and permitted events through April 30, 2020.
The complete clinical picture with regard to COVID-19 is not fully known and we are evaluating plans each day. We are encouraging residents to follow the CDC guidelines for large events and mass gatherings. The recommendation is for the next 8 weeks, organizers (whether groups or individuals) cancel or postpone in-person events that consist of 50 people or more throughout the United States. This recommendation is made in an attempt to reduce introduction of the virus into new communities and to slow community spread. Visit www.cdc.gov for more information.
Also, we have met with the major grocers in Houston and our region and we are NOT at risk of shutting down the grocery stores. Grocery stores are prepared to restock their shelves as we get through this evolving situation. Please be patient, maintain social distance and purchase the items needed for your family. When those items are gone, you will have another opportunity to return to the stores and purchase more items.
A few comments from public works department include:
- the water in the City of Houston is safe.
- only flush small amounts of toilet paper at a time, no wipes or other items
Mayor Sylvester Turner and Judge Lina Hidalgo are scheduled to host another press conference today at 5:00pm to discuss testing plans for our region and give more community guidance. Again, WE must all make smart decisions to prevent or at least slow down potential community spread. In times of concern, the world needs steady people. Worry and panic accomplish nothing except weakness of heart and head. We must remain informed and cautious. Keep living your lives, be smart and wash, wash and wash your hands!
