Thanks to funding from the 5 Corners Improvement District and its neighbor to the west, the Brays Oaks Management District, Houston police officers distributed 110 compact gun safes free of charge to members of the public on Tuesday (Aug. 22) at HPD’s Southwest Command station. The districts funded the purchase of the portable safes in cooperation with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
As District Attorney Kim Ogg emphasized in a talk to residents, the safes help prevent handgun thefts from unattended vehicles and can also be used to secure guns in homes where children might otherwise be able to pick them up.
Gun thefts from vehicles hit a record-high 4,401 in Houston last year. The gun safes can be attached to the underside of a car seat, making them harder to steal.
Check the management districts’ websites for information about potential future gun safe giveaways.
