Press Release by the Coalition to Stop Joe V’S Smart Shop Grocery Store

On Wednesday, May 6, at 10:30 a.m., residents from the communities of Hiram Clarke and Fort Bend Houston, located in Houston City Council District K, will hold a prayer vigil at the site of the proposed H-E-B Joe V’s Smart Shop, located at W. Fuqua and Beltway 8 to express community opposition to a store that the community feels is discriminatory.

The Coalition was formed as a response to notification that H-E-B would not be building a traditional H-E-B grocery store as promised, but instead would be building a no frills Joe V’s Smart Shop that carries fewer SKU’s and offers fewer amenities and services from that of a traditional H-E-B.

Over the course of several weeks, area elected officials and coalition members have met with H-E-B officials to express the community’s opposition to the building of a Joe V’s Smart Shop Grocery Store and request a meeting with Mr. Charles C. Butt, H-E-B Owner & Chief Executive Officer to no avail.

The Coalition to Stop Joe V’s Smart Shop Grocery Store consists of the South Houston Concerned Citizens Coalition, Super Neighborhoods 32, 36, 37, 39, 40 and 41, Super Neighborhood Alliance, Southwest 2000, Five Corners Management District, area elected officials, pastors of area churches and community leaders.
