Vice Mayor Pro Tem Castex-Tatum Leads July 4th Gun Saftety Billboard Campaign and Holiday Sting with HPD

As we get closer to the 4th of July holiday, it is important that we amplify our message of the dangers of firing guns in the air to celebrate. Firing guns into the air during holiday celebrations is a recurring practice that poses both legal and safety risks. In Houston and Harris County, numerous arrests have been carried out in recent years in response to people engaging in this dangerous behavior. We strongly encourage residents who have information about individuals responsible for firing guns to contact HPD and to contact Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS(8477). Your cooperation in reporting such incidents plays a crucial role in maintaining public safety. If your anonymous tip leads to an arrest you could be eligible for up to a $5K reward.

Vice Mayor Pro Tem Martha Castex-Tatum, has allocated overtime dollars to HPD Southwest Command Station for additional patrol in neighborhoods where we know residents have reported and continue to complain about hearing gunshots. The Brays Oaks Management District has also joined our quest by allocating overtime funds for HPD officers from the Gessner Station to also patrol areas of concern. An additional sergeant and six officers from each station will patrol the identified neighborhoods starting Saturday, July 1st through Tuesday, July 4th during the hours of 8pm to 2am. By increasing police presence this holiday season, it is our hope to deter not only the gunshots being fired in the air but also the unlawful fireworks in the city limits. Leave the fireworks to the professionals.

Thank you Clear Channel Outdoor for joining with us and having 41 billboards across the city and county to reiterate our messaging. The goal is to effectively reach a wide audience and encourage celebrating responsibly. Stray bullets can kill. What goes up, must come down.

Let’s make this 4th of July a safe and fun holiday time for everyone.
