District K Residents,
I have been in conference with The City of Houston’s emergency response team, and we are activated for Tropical Storm Nicholas. Per the
Office of Emergency Management, this is expected to primarily be a rain event with the potential for severe flooding on our roadways. Please plan to be off the roads this evening by 6:00 p.m. through tomorrow (Tuesday) as we may experience localized street flooding. The National Weather Service’s Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for Houston through Tuesday evening.
Please use today to make final preparations for your emergency kits to get through several days (this is recommended for any potential severe weather event). Houston Public Works has already positioned 43 barricades in flood-prone areas, and Houston Police and Fire have strategically placed high water rescue vehicles and boats throughout the city. Please help our city employees on the frontlines by avoiding travel during the extreme weather event, and never attempt to move you or your vehicle through high water.
Solid Waste is suspending collection services tomorrow and plans to resume service Wednesday with Tuesday’s scheduled collection. Please secure your bins and bring them off the street, so they do not block drainage flow or get swept away. HISD has cancelled all after-school activities and sporting events today, and all HISD offices and schools will be closed on Tuesday. Review a list of school closures
here.
Houston Health Department’s Curative COVID-19 testing sites in Houston are also closed through Tuesday, September 14, 2021. BARC will also be closed Tuesday, September 14, 2021 for all services to the public. Houston Municipal courts will be closed on Tuesday, September 14th as well.
Please stay tuned to the city’s social media platforms and the local news stations for updates. Stay safe and take care of each other.
